Ringtones and How They Were Invented

Learn about the invention of Mobile Ringtones!

The ringtone was the invention of a computer programmer by the name of Vesa-Matti Paananen. The Finnish inventor worked for Nokia at that time and came up with a great concept after tinkering with a clever function named “smart messaging.” He got the idea that if users were able to send text messages back and forth, then the same software could be utilized to convey other kinds of information, like codes. After having stumbled upon this brilliant concept, Paananen decidedly set to work immediately and thus a program he called “Harmonium” was born.

Paananen’s program Harmonium would most probably be judged as quite rough based on modern standards. And yet, this program laid down the foundation for the billion dollar industry the ringtone service is today. It allowed users to program musical sequences directly into their cell phones and then forward these sequences to their many friends.

There were private individuals who eventually made several ringtones of their own. They did so just because they liked experimenting with Harmonium or simply wanted to share their created ringtones to other people. Still there were other individuals who compiled these ringtones and made them available through a web site. You can still locate the majority of these pioneer ringtone providers on the Internet.

Things started off with Harmonium providing simple monophonic ringtones which were later on followed by polyphonic ones that had different notes synthesized in like fashion with those seen in music boxes. Today’s newest development is that of the true tone. When you speak of the true tone, you are referring to ringtones which cannot be distinguished from real songs heard over the radio. This is all possible simply because these were in fact recorded in a real studio.

Along with these developments in ringtones, the cell phone also evolved and took on upgrades as well. The original generation of phones was composed of big, clunky handsets that only had a small memory capacity. Songs were rough to listen to since there was so little space for complex programs to be stored in. The early cell phones could, in fact, only store up to five or six ringtones which pales in comparison to today’s units which can store up to hundreds.

Nowadays, our cell phones are really more powerful compared to the very first batch of computers. This can be seen in how much information can be stored in cell phone which can still extend its memory with a portable memory chip.

In the last fifteen years, people have become more involved and knowledgeable in technology. There are many ringtone websites today that accept contributed creations which are made by neither Nokia engineers nor computer nerds. And it is no longer surprising that teenagers experiment with software that would have made grown ups anxious during the computer age’s beginning. Truly, the ringtone has come along way from its humble origins.

This is all due to the brilliant idea of a bright engineer - Vesa-Matti Paananen.

And for this, Vesa-Matti Paananen, we thank you.
